š“ #10 Fiji Flow: Tariff Takes, Fast Flicks & Airport Tricks

Bula FijiFlow Fam,
Trump's taxing us, BSPās seeing double-green, and someone at the Ministry of iTaukei has gone full Hollywood.
Add in a misfired April Foolās joke at the airport and a few stats that just donāt stat- and youāve got a week thatās equal parts chaos and comedy.
Letās get into it. ā¬ļø

Scam Stats or Statistical Fluff?
The Fiji Timesā headline screams that ā50 per cent of Fijians have been targets of scams,ā but hereās the fine print - this claim is based on a survey of just 133 respondents. In the world of statistics, this is barely a blip on the radar. For context, Fijiās population is c.900,000 ā meaning this sample size represents a microscopic 0.01% of the population. Statisticians call this āsampling biasā, when a small, non-representative group is used to make broad, sweeping statements.

The bigger issue? Headlines like this trigger public panic and misplaced policy responses. Before we start framing national policies around these numbers, perhaps itās time to ask, are we reacting to facts, or just fluff?
š” Fijiās Rental Freeze: Protecting Tenants or Creating Landlord Tyrants?
So, FCCC did a walk-through, gave the all-clear, and the landlord... flipped the switch? Literally. Power and water cut off immediately after FCCC left, leaving a recovering stroke patient in the dark.
The landlord, in a case we highlighted earlier, seemingly has no fear of @FijianCCC and has now shut down the tennants power. The Tennant is a recovering stroke patient, and this incident has left us wondering if the commission is toothless in such matters.

Hereās the kicker: Fijiās rental freeze was meant to protect tenants, but instead, itās created a landscape where landlords have zero incentive to maintain anything. Why fix, when you can freeze? But letās not pretend cutting off utilities is ārecouping losses.ā Itās just bullying.
And FCCC? Silent. Again. Watching from the cheap seats while tenants pay the price. If this is āregulation,ā maybe weād be better off with none at all.
šŗšø Trump's 32% Tariff on Fiji: What It Means (And Doesnāt)
President Trump has announced a 32% tariff on imports from Fiji, and itās already made its rounds on social media. But before we all start panic packing bottled water, kava and ginger, letās take a breath.

Yes, the U.S. is Fijiās largest export market, with two-way trade hitting approx. US$524 million in 2023. That includes around US$366 million in goods shipped out from Fiji. So on paper, a 32% hike sounds like it should hurt, especially for high value exports like bottled water.
While Fiji doesnāt have a free trade agreement with the U.S., some items may be eligible for preferential treatment depending on trade status. Still, this could mean higher prices or a need to pivot to alternative markets like Australia or New Zealand, though thatās easier said than done.
Economists are watching closely, and government officials will likely open a dialogue with U.S. trade reps to soften the blow or find a workaround.
So yes, itās a headline. But for now? Itās more political theatre than economic earthquake. Just donāt expect your next bottle of Fiji Water in LA to get cheaper anytime soon.

Before we wrap this up, a few sharp eyes have spotted some suspicious maths floating around at The Pacific Newsroom. If Fiji Water alone is clocking in at US$241 million a year, how is all of Fijiās exports to the U.S. sitting at just US$212 million? š¤ Either someone's using a broken calculator, or the bottled waterās being counted twice.

š¢ Same Drum, Different Beat?
BSP Groupās refreshed identity landed with a thud louder than its kundu drum. Marketed as a bold Pacific homage, its new logo has instead sparked meme worthy metaphors, from fallopian tubes to awkward selfies.

Letās be clear: a rebrand is more than a logo. It's about signalling change, clarifying positioning, and earning emotional space in your audienceās mind. BSP, however, chose a design direction where two shades of green wrestle each other for visibility, a cardinal sin in contrast and legibility.

The symbolism may run deep, but when execution fails to communicate clearly, even the noblest strategy stumbles.
Legacy players like ANZ and Westpac havenāt rebranded because their focus remains on evolving tech, customer experience, and digital service delivery, not trying to look modern, but be modern.

Poll (432 respondents): @Fijiflowofficial Instagram
A rebrand should be brave, but not blind. And while the ānew drumbeatā campaign aims to unify culture and banking, itās worth asking: whoās dancing to it and whoās just confused?
š½ šļø FOOD & TRAVEL
Feasting at Niu Grillz šš„
When you're craving island flavors and serious meat portions, Niu Grillz at the Fiji Golf Club hits the spot. The vibe? Relaxed, with a side of smoky goodness and island flair.
On the table: a whole pan-fried fish drenched in creamy coconut sauce, tender island greens, and a chop plate thatās not for the faint-heartedā¦thick-cut, juicy, and packed with flavour.
Missed out on the smoked meats this round (cue the regret š), but definitely eyeing them for next time (apparently their smoker is active on Fridays with a live band).
Experience Minimalism, Island Style
Forget overpriced retreats and digital detox apps. At Oarsmanās Bay Lodge in Fijiās Yasawa Islands, simplicity is the real luxury - crystal clear oceans, no distractions, and the kind of quiet that forces you to truly reset.
Want to understand real minimalism? Spend a few days where life is simple by design.
Too Fast, Too Official?
The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is now apparentlyā¦ a film studio? Their Facebook page is decked out with Fast & Furious visuals, action clips, and even reclassified as āPage Ā· Film.ā
Collab with Vin Diesel? Accidental admin mix-up? Or a cheeky hack job? Either way, weāre loving this crossover episode of Ministry & Furious.

Not sure if our PM writes his own metaphors, but this one mightāve wandered out of the barbershop and straight into the sewing kit.

š§³ April Fools or Airport Fury?
A Fiji Airways rep nearly sparked a baggage mutiny after telling passengers their luggage wasnāt coming. Just as tempers started bubblingā¦ he dropped the April Foolās bomb.
Risky move, but gold delivery. Watch it unfold! š
Thatās a wrap gang. FijiFlowās back in a fortnight with more island gold, cheeky takes, and must-know stuff.
Share the flow; because if youāre chuckling alone, youāre doing it wrong.
